The business need

KD Jones Heating Engineers is a 20 year old business, run by a husband and wife team based in Redhill. Responsibility for the business operations and strategy lies with Janet Jones.

She was finding that the business was performing well, but had been static for some time. That being said, there were elements of it that she felt could be improved upon. Additionally, with a long-term vision of exiting the business in the next 10 years, there was increasing recognition that something needed to change. Therefore, to start the exit planning process, Janet sought a business coach to guide her in the business’ growth and systemisation needed for her exit planning to become a reality.

Janet however found that not all coaches are created equal! After an unsatisfactory experience with another coach, who she felt focused solely on sales and found too male-dominated, she went on a second search for a better fit of business coach to support her exit planning – and found a match in UK Growth Coach!

The first step to building an exit plan, or indeed any plan whether that be growth, scaling etc, is to fully understand the intricacies of your business and where the challenges actually lie. That enables the business owner to have confidence and insight as to where and how to focus their efforts – enabling the correct plan that will deliver results to be formulated.

So that is what we did with KD Jones Heating Engineers. Together we’ve focused on understanding the business and really getting to know the numbers. A KPI dashboard has been created to empower her to know the business and make decisions.

Understanding the challenges was one half of the brief, the other was to give Janet the time to work on the business and address them. So rather than adding to her to-do list, we’ve looked at systems and processes to enable the effective delegation of tasks. By documenting every system and process in the business, it has become second nature for Janet to delegate to existing or indeed train new members of staff up on them. 

The systems have been documented, alongside procedures and toolkits to support the team to deliver them effectively.

With the groundwork now in place, the focus of the coaching will move on to team management and performance, and building a business growth strategy in particular focused on profit flow
