In business, leadership vs management is a topic that regularly comes up. However, what do they both mean, and how do they complement one another? Many people think the two mean the same thing, but that’s not entirely true.

What is business leadership?

When you think about outstanding leadership, what comes to mind? Inspirational speakers, historical victories, great explorers?

Business leaders work to create the overall plan for a business and aim to inspire those around them to join them in turning that vision into a reality. 

Effective leadership inspires people to work each day towards a common goal. 

You could say that business leaders are responsible for setting a business’s ‘big-picture’ plans, working out where things currently are and where they would like to be in the next five years. 

What is business management?

On the other hand, where a business leader will set the plan and goals for the business, it comes down to those in management roles to pass the plan down to the team and ensure that everyone can work effectively to meet the goals. 

Managers work with their teams to ensure everyone is on the same page and contributing as effectively as possible to meet the plan that has been set out. They keep schedules on track and are involved in the decision-making process, too, so they can understand and help the team remain focused on the overall goals the leadership has decided upon. 

Another key aspect of business management is to keep the team engaged and motivated. This includes handling performance issues and ensuring the development of the team in order to achieve the business’ goals.

Leadership vs management – How can they work together?

Management skills and leadership skills are equally as important in the workplace. 

The complexity comes for small business owners as they often have to be both a leader and a manager. So it’s essential for owners to understand how they can function best in both regards. 

Without a solid fundamental leadership and management team behind the business, there’s no real way for progress to be made. 

Think of it like a ship without a rudder – you won’t be able to steer to get where you want to go, and sooner or later, the waves will rock you under if you’re sitting in the water. 

There are different approaches and skills required for a leader and a manager. As the business owner, probably covering both roles, you need to be honest with yourself as to where your skills, knowledge and preferences are and where you need to seek support, guidance and further education.
